CURTIS Nelson's hopes of playing his first game in almost five months today have been dashed by a waterlogged pitch.

The Oxford United centre back was ruled out for the season after rupturing an Achilles tendon in November.

After returning to training last month, Nelson was due to play 45 minutes for the development side in a friendly away to Stevenage.

But a waterlogged pitch at Broadhall Way has seen the game called off.

Having the 24-year-old back in action is a boost to a United side with the third worst defensive record in Sky Bet League One.

Head coach Karl Robinson is cautious about how quickly Nelson could return to the frame, but is looking forward to seeing him back.

Speaking before the news of the postponement, he said: “It’s a great bit of news that Nelse is playing.

“He’s been a top player and I know how good he is with the athleticism he brings to the team.

“We’ll see what happens, let’s not get too excited.

“We’ll see how he gets through the game and one the following week.

“Maybe he’ll be on the bench at the back end of next week.”

Ivo Pekalski, Canice Carroll and Aaron Martin were also among those expected to get a run-out.
