PHIL Edwards says Oxford United are bubbling with confidence as they aim to strengthen their play-off bid while weakening MK Dons’ challenge today.

The Dons are Sky Bet League One’s form team, while Michael Appleton’s men have won seven of their last eight games in all competitions.

Both sides are on the fringes of the battle for the top-six, but with the majority of sides above them playing a promotion rival this afternoon, a win could get them firmly in the mix.

Edwards said: “Everyone’s happy and it’s a good camp at the minute because we’re winning games, which breeds confidence.

“There’s a chance for us to get back-to-back wins and hopefully cut the gap to the play-off places.

“That’s where we want to be.

“It feels like it’s bubbling at the moment and there’s a belief in the camp and from the fans that something special might happen.

“Milton Keynes will want to carry on their good form, but if we can nick points off them it pushes them further away from us, so it will be an important game.”

Edwards knows all about the power of momentum.

The full back was part of the Burton Albion side which went from League Two to the Championship with successive promotions.

And while the Brewers achieved both by starting strongly and staying at the sharp end all season, Edwards sees similarities between that group and United’s squad.

He said: “At Burton last year we got written off, but as a group we were strong and I think we’ve got that here now.

“As long as we stay strong as a group, I think something could happen.

“There’s about seven teams within a couple of points and everyone will fancy their chances.

“It will be down to which team keeps their nerve and consistency of results.”

The 31-year-old was brought in on loan in August after Christian Ribeiro was ruled out for several months with a broken ankle.

With the summer signing and fellow right back Sam Long now fit again, Edwards’s place at right back is under threat, but he welcomes the challenge.

He said: “If you want to be successful it’s a squad game.

“I give my all every game, but when there is that person breathing down your neck, you know you have to put in that extra bit more.”
