PHIL Edwards celebrated a big turnaround in his and Oxford United’s form by grabbing the goal which saw them come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw in the fog at Scunthorpe United.

The full back opened his account for the club by heading in Chris Maguire’s corner just after half-time.

It cancelled out Duane Holmes’s first-half opener and from then on, the U’s came closer to a win against a side who had not lost at home in the league during 2016.

The goalscorer was symbolic for the visitors, who a fortnight earlier had lost 2-0 at Shrewsbury Town.

Edwards was dropped for that game, but has been a part of the side which has taken seven points from the three games since.

He said: “I know I wasn’t playing my best.

“Sometimes it’s good to have a week out to realise what you need to improve on.

“I don’t like sitting around. I want to play every minute, so it was good to get back on the pitch and doing what I’m good at – defending and nicking a goal here and there.

“We needed to get back to playing well, because we had been poor in the last few games.

“This is a very good week to get seven points – it’s a positive to look forward now.”

Edwards once scored 13 goals in a season for Accrington Stanley, where he also took penalties, but this was his first effort since May 2015.

He said: “I was due a goal and I’m glad I finally got it. I wish it had helped get us three points, but we’re happy with a point in the end.”
