OXFORD United target Chris Maguire has been released by parent club Rotherham United.

The 27-year-old foward spent nine games on loan at the U's before he returned to the Sky Bet Championship side last month.

Head coach Michael Appleton said this morning he was not optimistic about signing Maguire today, but the recent news will be a big boost for United.

A statement released by the Millers reads: "Rotherham United forward Chris Maguire has left the club by mutual agreement.

"We would like to thank Chris for his efforts whilst with the club and wish him well for the future."
