OXFORD United striker James Roberts has completed his loan move to Vanarama National League South side Oxford City.

The 19-year-old, who has not played a minute of football for United this season, joins on a month's loan and goes straight into the squad for City's trip to Whitehawk tomorrow.

Roberts was on loan at Chester earlier this season, but returned to United after suffering a hamstring injury.

As revealed in today's Oxford Mail, City's general manager Justin Merritt believes Roberts will boost his attacking options.

Merritt said: "Hopefully he’ll get lots of football and lots of goals and it will be a win for Oxford City, a win for Oxford United and a win for James himself.

“We try and play football the right way and are right on United’s doorstep so they could monitor his progress."

United head coach Michael Appleton added: “James is fit again after an injury and needs to be playing games.

"With City doing so well it is a fantastic opportunity for him."

Meanwhile, winger Jonny Giles has joined Vanarama National League outfit Southport on a month's loan.

He will join United teammate Max Crocombe, who is on loan at the club until the end of the season.

Appleton said: "Jonny has worked very hard on his fitness and earned a longer contract and now we need to see him in action on a regular basis as the next stage of his development.

"We wish them both the best of luck and will monitor their progress closely."
