OXFORD United remain hopeful of signing Chris Maguire despite the forward still holding discussions over his future with parent club Rotherham United.

The 27-year-old made nine starts during his loan spell with the U's, which ended just under a fortnight ago.

Maguire and his agent were due to meet Rotherham last week and it is understood neither party has reached an agreement.

But United insist they are ready to strike a deal before the window closes on Monday night, whether it be a new loan, or for Maguire to terminate the final six months of his contract and return on a free transfer.

When asked if United were still interested in signing the forward, head coach Michael Appleton said: "We're still discussing with him.

"There is still half an opportuntiy for that to happen.

"Obviously he has got to come to an agreement with Rotherham so sometimes things are a little bit out of your control and there is nothing you can do about it."

He added: "We are certainly well and truly ready to go as soon as we get the green light.

"If we don't get the green light before Monday, who knows, then he may be available for loan, but that is not our decision, that will come down to Rotherham."
