GEORGE Baldock says Oxford United are driven to keep the pressure on and extend their superb run for the visit of Newport County tonight (7.45).

The U’s have won ten of their last 13 games in all competitions and will be aiming for a fourth successive victory in Sky Bet League Two.

It is well known the squad have points targets for each five-game block and a 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday means the U’s have hit their mark with two fixtures to spare.

But Baldock made it clear the players are in no mood to let up now.

He said: “I don’t think the gaffer’s going to let us off the hook if we just get the nine points now.

“I think the target will be reset for this particular set of five games.

“If we want to go places this year we’ve got to keep our foot on the gas.

“I think if you ask any player who their favourite team is it would be someone like Barcelona and you know what they’re like when they go 1-0 or 2-0 up, they normally win by five or six.

“If we look at that approach to football then nine points isn’t enough, we want to go and get more.”

Cup commitments mean this evening’s clash is United’s sixth in 17 days, but the full back thinks the hectic schedule is helping the squad keep their focus on the short term.

He said: “Sometimes it’s nice to have a long week if you’re building up to a really important game, but when they come so thick and fast like this you’ve got no time to think.”

United’s impressive form has seen speculation linking Kemar Roofe with interest from Newcastle United in the last few days.

Baldock is another stand-out performer and while he is due to be on loan from MK Dons for the rest of the campaign, there is the risk of a recall.

The 22-year-old admitted his parent club were in control of his future, but is keen to stay and get a promotion on his CV.

He said: “If MK said to me ‘you’re going to play the next 23 games in the Championship at right back’ who’s not going to do that?

“But at the same time I want to play games and I’m enjoying doing it for Oxford United at the minute.

“To get promoted from League Two would be a much bigger achievement for me (than MK Dons) because last year I only played a handful of games.

“I’d be very surprised if I was recalled and loaned out to a League One club.

“I truly believe I’ll be here for the season and it will be brilliant.

But it’s totally out of my hands.”
