KEMAR Roofe confessed he knew nothing about how he scored a precious winner for Oxford United at York City last night.

The forward was in the right place to divert the ball home from a yard after Johnny Mullins’s shot was saved at a corner 19 minutes from time.

His sixth goal of the season earned a hard-fought 2-1 win.

United had opened the scoring through Danny Hylton, only to hand Rhys Turner an equaliser on a plate before half-time.

Roofe, who has gained a reputation for scoring spectacular goals, said: “I didn’t know anything about it – I was just going in for the rebound.

“It doesn’t matter how you score and it was important because we got the three points.”

Hylton, who took his tally for the season to five goals with the opener, said: “We made it very hard for ourselves.

“I think we were a bit naive after going 1-0 up, going gung-ho.

“Thankfully we had a bit of luck with Roofey, but I think it was what we deserved.”

It ended a three-game winless run and the way United fought back from the disappointment of a conceding a soft goal delighted head coach Michael Appleton.

He said: “Fair play to them, they had the grit and resilience to go and do that.

“It’s a big win, no doubt about that.”
