OXFORD United claimed their first win of the Sky Bet League Two season as Notts County were blown away by some scintillating attacking football.

The home side had the chances to comfortably score half a dozen on a night where they shrugged off falling behind for the third league game running.

After Thierry Audel's opener, Callum O'Dowda turned the game when he came off the bench after just 32 minutes, quickly levelling before setting up Kemar Roofe early in the second half.

United created and the squandered a host of chances, including an Alex MacDonald penalty which was saved.

But Danny Hylton made the game safe 12 minutes from time to seal an excellent victory. For the first time this season there was a change on the United teamsheet.

Patrick Hoban was rewarded for his 92nd-minute equaliser at Luton Town on Saturday by replacing Ryan Taylor, who dropped to the bench alongside new signing John Lundstram.

United picked up where they left off at Kenilworth Road, winning two corners inside the first minute.

Hoban then had what looked like a great chance following a sharp turn and through ball from Hylton.

The striker looked set to have a shooting chance one-on-one, but Audel raced back to make a terrific sliding tackle.

County had to work hard to get a foothold in the game, but out of nowhere they opened the scoring on 21 minutes.

This time Audel made an impact at the other end, heading in Graham Burke's in-swinging free-kick to prompt an inquest in the United defence.

Jon Stead also fizzed a shot from long range just over Sam Slocombe's crossbar as County began to feel at home.

Michael Appleton reacted quickly, replacing Hoban, who did not look sharp, with O'Dowda just after the half-hour mark.

It proved an inspired change and within four minutes the Kidlington winger levelled. United broke quickly and Liam Sercombe's cross reached the back post, where O'Dowda beat Roy Carroll from eight yards.

The 20-year-old had lifted the crowd and he starred again four minutes into the second half.

A rapid burst took him past Gill Swerts and when Scot Bennett fluffed clearing his low cross, Roofe pounced to slam the ball into the net for his ninth goal in 11 games.

United poured the pressure on a wobbling County defence and had chances to kill the game. The best came on 57 minutes, when a mesmerising Hylton run was halted to earn a spot kick.

But MacDonald, who replaced United's No 10 as the side's penalty-taker, saw his effort turned round the post by Carroll.

Unbowed, United continued to pour forward. Roofe had two great chances to double his tally for the evening - shooting over when clean through before heading off target from close range.

The home side were relentless and repeatedly forced County into mistakes.

While it was 2-1, County, despite hanging on for dear life, were still in the game.

But 12 minutes from time Hylton finally made the game safe.

It was a goal all his own making, scoring from his rebounded shot at the end of a 50-yard dribble which began in United's half.

The two-goal cushion gave Appleton the luxury of giving Lundstram a pressure-free debut in the closing minutes.

It rounded off an excellent evening for United, who still had chances to extend their lead through Sercombe and MacDonald.
