RYAN Taylor is optimistic of being fit for the start of Oxford United's campaign this weekend.

The striker limped off after just 18 minutes in their goalless draw with Coventry City last Saturday following a strong challenge from Reda Johnson.

It was feared Taylor would be ruled out of the Sky Bet League Two opener at home to Crawley Town.

The summer signing admitted it crossed his mind when it happened, but is now confident of returning to training before the end of the week.

He said: "I've done my ankle ligaments before and when I first did it I thought 'that doesn't feel right', but it's settled down well.

"It's not too bad and hopefully I'll be right for the end of the week and get a few good days training to get ready for Saturday.

"I've done some fitness stuff to get the heart rate up and it felt fine, just a little bit sore but nothing to be concerned about.

"One thing you don't want as a footballer is to start the season injured."

Liam Sercombe, who came off against the Sky Blues with a tight groin, was able to train yesterday without any problems.
