OXFORD United have made their first addition of the January transfer window by signing Joe Skarz.

The left back has agreed a deal until the end of the season after being released from the remainder of his contract at Rotherham United by mutual consent.

Skarz completed his medical and paperwork this morning, but it came too late to feature in today's game with Exeter City at the Kassam Stadium.

He said: "It's a new challenge which I'm really excited about.

"The manager has outlaid his plans to me and I'm really looking forward to it."

The 25-year-old has more than 300 appearances under his belt and played a role in Rotherham's back-to-back promotions which took them from League Two to the Championship.

A former Huddersfield trainee, he has started 17 games in the Championship this season for the Millers.

But he has played just once, a 5-1 defeat to Bournemouth in the FA Cup, since November and a desire to play first team football saw him look elsewhere.

United head coach Michael Appleton said: “This is a huge signing for us, Joe has been a regular player in a Championship side this season and he brings vital experience to our defence.

"He is someone who we’ve been keeping an eye on all season and as soon as we heard he was available we made our move.

"I think it speaks very highly of us that Joe was prepared to drop two divisions to come here despite other clubs also chasing him.”
