WES Burns revealed he had to shrug off cramp on the way to setting up Oxford United’s winner against Bury.

The 20-year-old debutant was feeling the effects of playing his first game in more than a month well before the end of the game.

But he summoned the energy to sprint on to a pass from Danny Hylton in the final minute of normal time to cross for Tyrone Barnett to give the U’s a 2-1 victory.

Burns admitted it was a challenge just to reach the ball.

He said: “I think it was just the desire to go and win the game that really pushed me on to chase it down.

“At one stage I was cramping up when running for the ball, so I thought the defender was going to smash me, but I just managed to nick it in front of him.”

The loanee from Bristol City also had to deal with an uneven surface which almost scuppered his chances of picking out Barnett.

He said: “The ball bobbled when I was just about to play it, so I thought ‘oh no, I can’t play it now, otherwise I’ll shank it into the car park’.

“It just took another roll of the ball and I saw Tyrone coming in at the back stick. Luckily it took a deflection and it looped into his path.”

He added: “Everyone says Bury are a passing side, but I think for the majority of the game, even though they went 1-0 up, we battered them.”
