GEORGE Long is no longer training with Oxford United, but negotiations continue with Sheffield United over ending the loan early.

The goalkeeper (pictured) was told last week he would no longer be selected in matchday squads, as boss Michael Appleton sought to make space for new loan signings before next Thursday’s deadline.

Long, who played 11 games while Ryan Clarke was recovering from foot surgery, has since returned home.

But with the loan due to run until January, the two clubs are yet to reach a financial agreement.

Appleton said: “There’s just a discussion at the minute about what we actually do in terms of who pays who for the remainder of the time he’s supposed to be here.

“It’s quite normal. It’s just a discussion that has to be had between both clubs.

“He is back at Sheffield United and I understand it because I’ve made a decision that Max (Crocombe) will come on the bench, if anything to hopefully bring a couple more players in.”

Clarke praised the impact the England youth international had made in training.

He said: “All credit to George, he’s like a Trojan in training and if I'm honest it inspired me to get back fit.

“In terms of his attitude and the way he trained, I’ve worked with some top keepers and for his age he’s got absolutely everything.

“It keeps you on your toes and Max does the same.”
