BOXING: Kaluza keeps up perfect run

8:00am Friday 6th June 2008

Oxford Boxing Academy's unbeaten teenage prospect Ben Kaluza, 14, extended his winning run to five when he saw off Midlands schoolboy championship finalist James Roberts at Worcester Rugby Club.

The Bicester bantamweight, 14, gave away both age and a considerable level of experience.

Roberts, with three times as many outings under belt, set the initial pace and just edged the opening the opening session.

But any thoughts of romping to any easy win were quickly dispelled as Kaluza started to bring his right hand into the equation.

More and more he began to use this weapon and inevitably Roberts could not disguise the frustration.

His tank had hit empty by the final round and he was constantly hanging on to survive after Kaluza had opened up his defences.

Solid jabs, reinforced by solid shots to both head and body, piled on the points as the Oxfordshire teenager extended his perfect record.

Academy coach Faz Keyani said: "Ben is just so focused on what he does in the ring and nothing seems to distract him, which is something very rare for a boxer of his age.

"But he is also realistic and takes nothing for granted - one step at a time and learn every inch of the way - seems to be his approach."
