A CREW from Bicester have won a prestigious race around the Isle of Wight.

Arun Rockall, crewed by an Oxfordshire team of Sea Scouts from Greatmoor Sailing Club, near Steeple Claydon, were the first family crew to finish the Round the Island Yacht Race so picked up the JP Morgan Trophy.

Mark Attrill, from Bicester, was at the helm of the boat which also finished third in class, fourth in group and 13th overall out of 1,533 entrants with a corrected time of 7hrs 37mins for the 50-mile race.

He was assisted by sons Cameron, 19, and Harvey, 14, as well as Barry Auger, Gerhard Eilertson and Don Valvone, a dinghy instructor and bowman.

With reported wind gusting 50 knots, big seas and dangerous overfalls at St Catherines Point, it was not for the faint hearted and more than 500 boats retired.
