Nine sailors from Bicester helped set the Guinness World Record for the largest race held within 24 hours.

Mark Attrill and his children Cameron, Amy, Harvey and Morgan were joined by Barry Auger and his son, Jack, along with Ella McNichol and Emily Holt at Great Moor Sailing Club, Steeple Claydon.

The sailors from Bicester were in three of 66 boats racing at the Buckinghamshire venue.

It formed part of Bart’s Bash, which saw thousands of people from around the world taking part in a sailing race that has now just been ratified as a Guinness World Record.

The event was run to remember Olympic gold medallist Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson and to inspire the next generation of sailors.

Bart’s Bash attracted more than 30,000 participants of all ages and abilities, taking part at more than 700 sailing clubs in 68 different countries and raised over £300,000.

Harvey Attrill, 13, took part despite having broken his left leg while playing football.

The limb was in a special waterproof protective cover with a neoprene seal just in-case they capsized.

“The hardest part was getting into the boat,” said Harvey.

Amy Attrill, 15, was the most successful of the three crews, finishing third in her 420 sailing dinghy in the junior class.
