FOOTBALL: Still sets sights on cup swansong

Ardley United manager Dan Still (pictured) is looking for his side to produce the form that saw them beat high-fliers Witney United and Hungerford Town when they take on Shortwood United in the Soccer Kits Plus Supplementary Cup final at Fairford Town on Saturday.

Still, who takes charge for the last time before he hands over the reins to Kevin Brock, said there were only a number of occasions that he felt his team produced the goods this term.

"We have beaten Witney 5-1 twice in one season, drew with Almondsbury and beat Hungerford," said Still.

"But too many times we have shown our frailties.

"We are going to have to put those poor performances behind us and find that good form for the last time on Saturday.

"We've got our end-of-season do the following week and a hospitality box at Ascot races, so it would be nice to go there having won a trophy."

Still expects Shortwood to be a tough proposition.

"You don't finish fifth in the Premier Division if you are a poor side," he said.

"They have two very good strikers. One of them was at Forest Green Rovers for a while, but it didn't work out for them.

"Having played them three weeks ago, I know that we will have to be at our best to beat them."

Still's last league game on Saturday ended in disappointment as they lost 3-1 at home to Hook Norton in the Premier Division.

Joe Davies gave Hook Norton the lead in the 31st minute, only for Ardley to level three minutes into the second half when keeper Richard Meadows failed to intercept a through ball, and Andy Prescott nipped in to lob keeper Richard Meadows.

Steve Howkins restored Hooky's advantage before fellow substitute Ben Spiero chipped Matt Dixon for No 3.

Still said: "It was a shame we couldn't get that win. We shuffled the side a bit with the cup final in mind. We were level and gave away two silly goals. I'm looking forward to the cup final, which hopefully we can win and end the season on a high."
