ARDLEY United’s march towards to the title stumbled when they were held to a 1-1 draw in tricky conditions at Letcombe.

For only the third time in 15 Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 West matches this season, Craig Adey’s side failed to record a victory.

But they still hold a five-point lead at the top.

On a sticky pitch and in wet windy conditions, Ardley took time to get going against their confident hosts, who created numerous chances in the opening 20 minutes Strikers Adam Bruce and Harry Monger both missed clear opportunities for Letcombe, whose closing down prevented the visitors from playing their usual passing game.

But it was Ardley, who took the lead against the run of play in the 35th minute.

Skipper Deon Gallacher skipped around the advancing keeper Charlie McCreadie on the edge of the penalty area and finished well from 18 yards.

The second half saw Ardley come out stronger, but again against the run of play, the hosts levelled in the 55th minute.

A pass from Adam Bruce enabled Ben Hummel to race clear and score past keeper Steve Lewis.

Ardley raised their game in the last quarter and dominated the play.

But McCreadie made three outstanding saves to deny the leaders a 13th victory of the league campaign.

They will be looking to get back to winning ways this Saturday, when they entertain fifth-placed Pewsey Vale.

Division 1 West leaders Bicester Town are again without a game.
