MARVIN Johnson is available for Oxford United tomorrow after Pep Clotet insisted nothing had changed with the winger’s position at the club.

The U’s boss praised the 26-year-old’s attitude during the 3-0 win against Portsmouth last weekend.

It came in the aftermath of United turning down a bid, reportedly for £1m, from Hull City.

There was further speculation this week that Johnson had told Clotet he wanted to leave as the Tigers prepared a second bid.

Clotet did not to reveal what the pair had spoken about in the last few days, but intends to consider Johnson for selection at Scunthorpe United.

He said: “These are conversations that the player and you have that you always keep for yourself.

“My only focus is: is the player here today? Yes.

“So he’s our player and I want him to keep growing, because he’s a fantastic player and has a huge career in front of him.

“He has to assess his position as much as possible, but at the same time he’s at a club that gave him the chance to put himself in the spotlight.

“With us he will only improve and get better as the team improves.

“While he’s in this condition that he’s not for sale there’s not much to talk about it.”

Clotet is clearly frustrated by the ongoing uncertainty.

He said: “If you analyse the facts then speculation should not be there, but it still is.

“The facts are Hull City came and bid for one of our players and the club stated very clearly this player is not for sale.

“Apart from that I’m Marvin’s manager and I just want him to focus 100 per cent on making his best as a player.”

It comes amid talk across the Premier League and EFL about the merits of closing the transfer window before the start of the campaign.

U’s chairman Darryl Eales told the Oxford Mail this week he would be in favour of the proposal.

While Clotet broadly agrees, he can see the counter-argument.

He said: “The fact the window is open a little bit later helps if you have a last-minute injury.

“I think it’s good we are having this debate.

“As a manager, I would like it to start the league with the team we’re going to be working with for the whole league (season).”
