CAPTAIN Jake Wright is urging his Oxford United teammates to see the job through when Millwall visit the Kassam Stadium tonight.

A trip to Wembley is the prize for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy southern area final winners.

And with the U’s 2-0 ahead after a superb performance at The Den almost three weeks ago, Wright knows his side will be seen as favourites to progress.

But they come up against a side who are sixth in Sky Bet League One and unbeaten since that defeat on January 14.

Wright is the only survivor left from United’s 2010 Conference play-off final at Wembley – the last time the U’s played at the home of English football – and is eager to lead the club to success.

The 29-year-old, who has been nominated for Sky Bet League Two’s player of the month for January, said: “We are really looking forward to trying to get there (Wembley) and winning the game.

“It would be massive for everyone and something we are all buzzing for, but we will try to be as professional as we can.

“We need to try and not think about Wembley and play it like a normal game and I am sure if we put in a good performance we will be in the final.”

United have the upper hand with a two-goal lead, given to them by a double from Kemar Roofe and some fine late stops by goalkeeper Benji Buchel.

But Wright is fully aware tonight’s visitors will be doing all they can to overturn the deficit.

And he is in no doubt they will be quickly out the blocks in the hope of wiping out the hosts’ first-leg advantage.

Wright said: “It is a great position, but that is all it is.

“Millwall are a good side, doing really well in the league since we have played them and they are a dangerous team.

“We have got one foot in the final, but we sill need to make sure we get a result.”

The centre-half remembers the feeling of beating York City in front of 30,000 United fans in 2010 and is fully aware of what another trip to Wembley would mean to the club and its supporters.

“It is massive for the club and everyone to do with Oxford,” he said.

“It would be a great day out for families, your kids come and watch.

“I have seen how many fans we take, I have seen how passionate they are and I still remember that day.

“I told the lads about it and obviously we are all looking forward to it, but we have to make sure we turn up against Millwall.”

Wright is up against Mansfield Town midfielder Chris Clements, Northampton Town winger Ricky Holmes and Morecambe striker Shaun Miller for January’s player of the month honour.

The winners are announced this Friday.
