JOSH Ruffels believes the increased competition in midfield has made him a better player, even though he is not getting in the side.

The former Coventry City trainee made 29 league starts last season, a figure only surpassed by four outfield players.

But the 21-year-old had to wait until Tuesday’s 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Sheffield Wednesday to be included in the XI for the first time this season.

U’s boss Michael Appleton has preferred new signing Liam Sercombe with Danny Rose, who are likely to start against Yeovil Town tomorrow, while John Lundstram has added another option.

Despite not figuring as prominently so far this season, Ruffels thinks it will be good for both him and the team in the long run.

He said: “Good players have come in and you have to try and compete with them and up your own game.

“It only helps you, it’s a good thing people have come in and it’s made me play better.”

He added: “Credit to Danny Rose and Liam Sercombe, they’ve played really well and I can’t argue with that at all.

“I’ve just got to bide my time, train well and do what I can when I get on the pitch.

“It’s the same with John Lundstram who has come in, he’s a really good player so the competition is high.

“I’ve just got to be patient and it’ll be fine.”

The changed role of Kidlington’s midfielder is indicative of a strengthening unit, as is the status of his former partner in the middle of the park.

Michael Collins started 38 of United’s 46 Sky Bet League Two games last season, but is now surplus to requirements.

Ruffels said: “He was really good for us last season, but that’s the way football is.

“I’ve just got to look at myself and make sure I’m playing well.”

He added: “I had a spell last season where I was out for about ten games.

“You can moan as much as you want, but it’s not going to get you anywhere.

“I just keep my head down and try to stay as positive as I can and not mope around and be a nightmare for the coaching staff.”
