Ardley United boss Kevin Brock is hoping that history doesn’t repeat itself when his side face Ascot United in the final of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup at Didcot Town on Bank Holiday Monday, writes Nick Farrant.

Last season, the then holders Ardley lost 2-1 to the Berkshire side and Brock admits they face a similarly tough task against the third-placed outfit.

“Ascot are a good side,” he said.

“They did the double over us this season.

“It was very good game against them at their place (Ardley lost 2-1) and should have got something out of it.

“They will be favourites because they finished above us in the league, so it would be nice to put one over them.”

Brock said winning the cup would be the best way to end what has been a disappointing campaign – they finished eighth – on a high note.

Even before the season started, Brock was dealt a severe blow when they lost top-scorer Ryan Brooks to Didcot, Stuart Bridges (Royston Town) and Ben Thomas, who went to America.

In addition, a number of other players suddenly left, leaving the manager with a small squad to work with.

Although they put together a winning streak mid-season, they were never able to recover from a poor start as Flackwell Heath were crowned champions.

“The league campaign has been so disappointing after we got so near last year.

“We did well in the Senior Cup (losing out to his old club Banbury in the semi-finals after extra time).

“When the season ended in May, I was hoping to add a couple of players to what I thought was a good squad.

“But losing all the players before the season put us on the back foot straight away.

“We basically had to start from scratch and get together a new team.”

Troy Bryan could play some part in the game, having missed most of the season with a groin injury, while striker Ricky Johnson should return following a hip problem.

Brock added: “Hopefully, they will be okay.

“Obviously, at this stage of the season, we aren't able to sign anyone, so we’’ll train tonight and see whose ready for Monday.

“We want to win the cup because it’s always nice to end the season with a trophy.

“Hopefully, it will be a good game on what will be a decent pitch at Didcot.”

The final kicks off at 3pm.
