Ardley United got back to winning ways with a 2-1 home victory against Wootton Bassett Town on Tuesday night.

It was the ideal response from Kevin Brock’s side whose five match-winning Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division run had ended in a 2-1 loss at Ascot on Saturday.

Against Wootton Bassett Ardley struggled to make any real impact and went behind when Nathan Gambling’s cross was met by Dan Bailey.

Ardley had a chance to level, only for Ricky Johnson’s well-struck shot to hit the bar.

The hosts had a lucky escape when Bailey’s corner kick evaded everyone and came back off the far post before being cleared.

Injuries forced the half-time introduction of Diego Petriaggi and Kieran Scott and they helped turn the game.

On 50 minutes Ardley were level.

Wootton failed to clear their lines and when the ball was played back in, Chris Jackson powered home a header.

With both substitutes having an impact on either flank, Ardley were creating numerous chances, with Luke Ingram forcing good saves from Wootton keeper Luke Kuczynski.

Ardley midfielder Callum Convey then saw his corner rebound off a post.

However, six minutes from time, Ardley got the winner.

Petriaggi was tripped in the area, with Convey firing in the resulting penalty.

In Saturday’s loss, Ascot took the lead on the half-hour mark when a shot from Joe Grant slipped through Ardley keeper Jack Harding’s hands before trickling over the line.

But it was all-square on 69 minutes.

Johnson flicked on Adam Beckett’s throw for Gavin Kidd to head past Chris Grace for his first league goal.

But his joy turned to despair a minute from time when he brought down Daryl McLean.

Rob Saunders drilled home the resulting spot-kick.

Ollie Stanbridge had the chance to level for Ardley at the death, only to fire his shot over the bar when well-placed.

On Saturday, Ardley begin their defence of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup when they entertain Division 1 West side Carterton.
