CRICKET: Brave Nondies are edged out in thriller

Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts suffered agony as they lost by one wicket in the tightest of finishes in Cherwell League Division 1 against Oxford Downs.

First, Amin Rafiq took 6-34 to put Downs in command and send Nondies to 126 all out.

Then Shabaz Alam (5-28) and Umair Ghazali (3-30) brought the hosts back into it.

But Justin Cantrill’s 44 kept Downs in the game, and they eventually made it to 128-9 to leave Nondies deep in trouble at the bottom of the table.

l Ox & Bletchingdon Nondescripts 10, Oxford Downs 25 Twyford’s ivision 2 championship bid suffered a dent as Aston Rowant 2nd held on for a draw.

The visitors were left frustrated as they failed to remove last pair.

Stafford Sansome (70) and Tanveer Nadeem (43) were the mainstays of Twyford’s 200 all out, while Richard Cook took 5-74 and Tim Foster 3-41.

Cook then top-scored with 43 for Rowant, but Twyford’s Bilal Afzal (4-45) and Mohammed Shafaqat (3-36) had them 156-9 at the close.

l Aston Rowant 2nd 7, Twyford 19 Garry Adamson hit 120 as Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts 2nd racked up 280-8 at Great Brickhill 2nd in Division 6, but still saw his side lose by four wickets.

Promotion-chasing Brickhill powered to 281-6 in reply, with Adam Harwood hitting 104.

Tristan Hardy (63no) and Glenn Burrows (36no) steered Brickhill home, despite Tauqeer Ahmed taking 4-93.

Twyford 2nd’s Ben Elkington (122) and Sam Lyon (104) both hit tons against Aston Rowant 3rd in a match they came close to losing.

Elkington and Lyon fired Twyford to 260-3, but Tom Needham (61), George Storton (52), Paul Humphreys (43no) and Gary Condon (30) took Rowant to the brink of victory at 251-8 as Andrew Gilder claimed 4-81.
