FOOTBALL: Bryan's late goal brings Ardley joy

Troy Bryan scored the winner for Ardley United as they triumphed 2-1 at Cheltenham Saracens in the first round.

It was their second win against the same opponents in four days following their 5-0 midweek victory in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division.

The result saw Ardley book a trip to either Pagham or Horsham YMCA in the second round of the FA Carlsberg Vase on November 17.

The Sussex County League Division 1 sides, who drew 2-2 in the first game, were due to replay last night.

After Ardley keeper Joe White made a good save, Kevin Brock’s side dominated much of the first half, but were unable to turn their superiority into goals.

And they paid the price when the hosts went ahead five minutes before the break.

Ardley gave away the ball in midfield and Chris Sayce broke clear before firing past White with a fine finish.

Early in the second half, Ardley striker Jason Castello brought a good save out of home keeper Ryan Betteridge after a fine burst into the area, before Troy Bryan headed wide.

Ardley kept up the pressure and were eventually rewarded on 84 minutes with the equaliser.

A left wing cross was headed on by substitute Joseph Starrett to Joe Coleman, who fired into the far corner.

Barely had the hosts recovered from this blow when two minutes later Ardley took the lead, Coleman turning pro-vider this time as his cross from the left was directed past the keeper by Bryan.

Ardley then played out the last few minutes with few alarms.

On Saturday, Ardley play host to Marlow.
