MOTORSPORT: Meadows savours title glory
10:00am Saturday 13th October 2012 in Sport
Runaway leader Michael Meadows wrapped up the Porsche Carrera Cup GB title with two races remaining.
The Banbury driver has been favourite to clinch the crown ever since winning four of the first five races.
And he finished the job in style at Silverstone, taking round 18 from pole position in his Redline Racing car.
It was the 25-year-old’s sixth victory of the season and gave him an unassailable 54-point lead over nearest challenge Ben Barker – who won the day’s first contest – with just the final round at Brands Hatch remaining.
Meadows said: “It was really important to me to win the race.
“Ben Barker has dominated the last few races, and I wanted to come to Silverstone and show that I hadn’t just settled for finishing fourth (where he finished in race one). I wanted to get pole and win.”
Meadows is looking to move up to the Porsche Supercup, which supports the Formula 1 championship, and is hoping to agree a deal for the 2013 season before Christmas.
Standings (top ten): 1 M Meadows 306pts, 2 B Barker 252, 3 S Tordoff 236, 4 J Gelzinis 235, 5 R Butcher 222, 6 D Lloyd 175, 7 R Plant 173, 8 A Al Harthy 137, 9 G Geddie 105, 10 O Mortimer 100.
FERGUS Walkinshaw claimed two solid top-ten finishes in the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup at Silverstone.
The highlight for the Chipping Norton racer came when he and teammate Hunter Abbott battled for position during race two won by Carl Breeze.
The 21-year-old came out on top, finishing seventh to add to his eighth place in race one, which saw Andrew Richardson take the chequered flag.
The haul consolidated Walkinshaw’s place in the championship’s top eight heading into the final round.
Standings (top ten): 1 T Sharp 639pts, 2 C Breeze 637, 3 T Ingram 587, 4 A Richardson 417, 5 C White 372, 6 H Abbott 348, 7 J Hill 313, 8 F Walkinshaw 273, 9 J Orton 253, 10 J Wakefield 240.
MTECH Lite’s Sean Walkinshaw rounded off the Pro-tyre Formula Renault BARC season by coming 12th at Silverstone.
It meant the 18-year-old Chipping Norton driver finished 18th in the overall rankings.
In race one, a collision forced an early retirement.
