FOOTBALL: Elkins - Didcot's record FA Cup run can go on
DIDCOT Town are quietly confident of continuing their superb FA Cup run after avoiding a big name in the fourth round qualifying draw.
The Railwaymen are enjoying their best run in the competition after upsetting Blue Square Bet South side Maidenhead United on Saturday.
Standing in their way of a place in the first round proper are Arlesey Town, who will visit Loop Meadow on Saturday, October 20.
Didcot could have been paired with a big Blue Square Bet Premier side such as Luton Town.
But after initially being disappointed about missing out on a high-profile clash, Town boss Gary Elkins is optimistic of progressing.
He said: “We all hope for a big tie at home to someone like Luton, but the reality is it was a dream to beat Maidenhead.
“We have to see it as a game we have a chance of doing well in.
“If we play as well as we did last Saturday we stand a very good chance of going through.
“I’m sure they will be thinking the same as well.”
Arlesey, from Bedfordshire, play one division above their opponents, in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier.
They impressively knocked out Blue Square Bet North leaders Brackley Town 4-3 on Saturday, but Didcot’s victory over Maidenhead means they are unlikely to be intimidated.
The Railwaymen have banked £16,750 from their cup exploits so far, with a further £12,500 up for grabs in prize money for the winners of the fourth round qualifying tie.
The four-game winning run has provided a very welcome boost to Didcot. Elkins said: “You hope to getthrough one or two rounds, but to win on Saturday was a complete bonus.
“For a club like ours the incentive of the prize money is massive – it keeps them going.”
Before resuming their FA Cup campaign, Elkins’ side have three fixtures to focus on.
They begin tonight with another clash against Maidenhead, this time in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup first round.
The game at York Road kicks off at 7.45pm.
