GOLF: Pepperell lift in bid for Euro spot
Eddie Pepperell gave himself an excellent chance of qualifying for the full European PGA Tour by finishing third in the latest tournament on the Challenge Tour.
The 21-year-old Frilford Heath professional finished two shots behind the winner, French amateur Julien Brun, at the Allianz Golf Open Toulouse Met-ropole in France on Sunday, bagging £14,000 in prize-money.
That takes Pepperell, who won the event at Bretagne, France, in May, into 15th place on the Challenge Tour money list with about £58,000.
The top 20 players at the end of the season automatically qualify for the main tour, where there are millions to be won. There are just four tournaments to go.
Despite two double bogeys on the front nine, Pepperell finished on 11-under-par 273, thanks to a round of 68, with Brun posting 271.
Pepperell said: “I’m really proud of the way I dug in and fought hard today, because I didn’t play that well.
“I was thinking a lot about my win in Brittany at the start of the season, because it was really windy that day too.
“In the end, I came up just short, but third is still a lovely result and it gives me a great chance of finishing inside the top 20.”
