ATHLETICS: Gardner stars in 24-hour contest

OXFORDSHIRE’S Robin Gardner recorded a personal best distance to finish third in the Self Transcendence 24-hour track race at Tooting Bec.

The 54-year-old former Woodstock Harrier, who is based at Milcombe, near Banbury, ran 205.669km, which is just short of 128 miles.

This beat his previous mark of 190.837, set when finishing seventh in last year’s race.

London 2012 Olympic torch bearer Gardner was the first vet 50 in a thrilling race, which saw three runners competing for the final two podium places right up until the final hour.

The race was won by Kevin Doyle (Kimberworth) with 217.847.
