ANGLING: Brilliant Benwell is champion - again
11:00am Saturday 22nd September 2012 in Sport
Andy Benwell (Predator) was crowned carp league champion for the fourth year running after winning the 13th round on Pans Lake.
The lake at Pan’s Hill fished very well throwing up some big weights.
Benwell started tight over to the far side using pole and paste catching carp and f1, before switching to his margins with maggot and groundbait to take some bigger specimens with 91 fish for a total weight of 161lbs 12oz.
Second was Paul Dann (159-0-0), who fished the pole tight to the near side edge, catching carp using maggot over groundbait, with Mick Lane (129-12-0) third using maggot and groundbait in the margins for plenty of carp and f1s.
Meanwhile, Oxford Waltonians AC’s Paul Bowers destroyed the field with a net of chub up to 5lb, in a three-corner match with Goring AC and Marston AC on the Thames at Wheatley.
It proved tough with the river very low with no flow and still in places.
Result: 1 P Bowers 17.14.8, 2 A Tompkins (Marston) 3.10.0, 3 S Tompkins (Marston) 2.15.0. Team result: 1 O Waltonians 21.1.0, 2 Marston 11.1.0, 3 Goring 4.7.0.
Elsewhere, Doug Robinson won the S H Taylor Cup (Prior Cup Round 1) at Stables Lake, Kirtlington.
Alternating between feeder and pole with maggot and meat, he landed 21 carp to 8lb.
Pete Clarke found half a dozen big carp for second spot. All his fish were caught on the pole with maggot.
Brian Hutchings used the same tactics for eight carp. The total match weight was 304.2.0. 17 fished.
Result: 1 D Robinson 91-13-00, 25pts, 2 P Clarke 42-13-00, 20, 3 B Hutchings 35-00-00, 19.
