ATHLETICS: Ruiz on song at Longworth

SPANISH opera singer Jordi Garcia Ruiz hit the right note to win the Longworth 10K.

Ruiz, from Barcelona, entered the race after seeing details on the internet while researching a holiday in the UK with his wife.

And he clocked 35mins 36secs to take first place.

Ruiz said: “I compete in lots of races in Spain, many of them involving thousands of runners; so when visiting this country we decided to find a run, which was a bit different.

“The Longworth 10k certainly met our expectations; relatively small and friendly, the route was easy to follow and took us through some lovely countryside.

“We even got to visit a traditional country pub afterwards.”

This year’s Longworth 10K attracted a record 108 participants, raising more than £1,000 for the Hinton and Longworth Education Fund.

Abingdon School’s Thomas Kelly finished second in 37.39, with Matthieu Marshall (Oxford City) third in 38.16.

Headington Road Runner Jim Thorn was eighth and first veteran home in 40.30.
