CRICKET: Shallow is the hero for Twyford


A superb unbeaten century from Hyron Shallow was the difference as The Oxford Times Cherwell League Division 3 leaders Twyford beat Oxford 3rd by three wickets.

Shallow's runs came in his side's 221-7 as they successfully chased the 218 all out Oxford had scored after they chose to bat first.

Warren Steyn (61) and Syd Khan (40) batted well for Oxford, while Ben Elkington (6-38) shone with the ball for the visitors.

l Oxford 3rd 11pts, Twyford 25 Division 1 Bicester & North Oxford are in danger of being cut adrift at the foot of the table after they slumped to their fifth straight defeat, this time to fellow strugglers Oxford 2nd.

The club have never fallen out of the top flight but are now 19 points behind the rest after they failed to defend their 161 all out at Roman Way.

Oxford, who had chosen to field first, made hard work of the run chase but eventually reached the victory target for the loss of seven wickets.

l Oxford 2nd 25, Bicester & N Ox 10 Division 2 Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts went down to a six-wicket defeat against Challow.

Nondies posted 168-8 after being inserted, Ian Mead hitting 43 and Mark Strong 60 not out.

The visitors were always in control in reply once Nick Meadows had hit 64 and Brad Jones 38.

l Oxford & Bletch Nondies 6pts, Challow & Childrey 25 Division 5 The batsmen had it all their own way in the match between Challow & Childrey 2nd and Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts 2nd, which ended in a draw.

Chris Day (86), Rupert Taylor (52) and Anthony Benson (48no) helped Nondies reach an impressive 310-7 after they chose to bat on a flat track. Day and Taylor added 121 in 20 overs for the third wicket.

Owen Dimbylow then hit a magnificent 108 not out, while Graham Frankland took 4-44 in Challow's 194-6.

l Challow 2nd 10, Nondies 2nd 14 A sparkling all-round performance by Ian Bryan helped Bicester & North Oxford 2nd defeat Abingdon Vale 2nd by five wickets.

Bryan took 5-26 with his left-arm spin as Vale limped to 138 all out.

Bicester slumped to 43-5 in reply before Bryan (60no) saw them home in the 38th over.
