To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns.

1964

OXFORD United looked likely to let inside forward Arthur Longbottom leave.

Longbottom, who joined the club from Millwall just before the beginning of the previous season, lost his place to Keith Havenhand in the team that beat Walsall 6-1 in the League Cup.

His transfer request was due to go before the board, but manager Arthur Turner said: “It is likely he will be allowed to go if we get a suitable offer.”

Longbottom, who made 39 appearances in the 1963/64 campaign, left for Colchester United the following month.

1984

OXFORD United manager Jim Smith beamed with delight after seeing his side move into fourth place in Division 2 with a 3-2 win against Fulham at the Manor.

John Aldridge scored twice along with a goal for Billy Hamilton.

But one of Aldridge’s finishes reminded Smith of a striking legend.

He said: “That second goal was pure Jimmy Greaves, it was fantastic the way he took the ball round the keeper.”

The striker was almost embarrassed by the comparison with Greaves.

“That’s quite a compliment,” he said.

1995

OXFORD United boss Denis Smith said he was unlikely to pursue his interest in Cambridge United striker Carlo Corazzin.

Cambridge had placed too high a valuation on the Canada international, who hit 43 goals in 80 league games.

Tommy Taylor, the Cambridge manager, dismissed the prospect of any club getting the 23-year-old for around £300,000 and is looking at closer to £500,000.

According to sources in Cambridge, Oxford had submitted a bid £50,000 but Cambridge had considered it a “try-on”.

Smith said: “I made an enquiry about Corazzin but I don’t think anything’s going to happen.

“He’s just one of several players I have enquired about.”
