CAMERON Norman struck a stoppage-time penalty to give Oxford United a 3-2 victory in a pre-season friendly at Hungerford Town.

The full back was brought down for the spot kick and despatched it to give Karl Robinson’s side their sixth win in seven warm-up games.

It came the hard way, with Harvey Bradbury, son of former U’s striker Lee, who pounced on a defensive mix-up giving the hosts a deserved lead at half-time.

But the away side improved after the break and first year scholar Fabio Lopes produced an accomplished finish to equalise early in the second half.

United led 14 minutes from time when an unnamed triallist playing at left back headed home, but the visitors could not hold on.

Substitute goalkeeper Manny Agboola was caught out by an unpredictable bounce, allowing one of Hungerford’s on-trial players to run through and score, before Norman’s late winner.

United fielded a mixture of senior players and youngsters, with triallist Michael Doughty given a second game to impress following his debut at Hampton & Richmond Borough on Saturday.

A hard, bumpy playing surface at Bulpit Lane combined to make challenging conditions for the visitors.

United found it difficult to keep possession and Hungerford were quick to pounce on errors in possession.

One such mistake from Long saw Bradbury charge forward past Rob Dickie, but goalkeeper Jack Stevens forced the striker wide.

Doughty fired a free-kick wide from range, but the clearer chances continued to go Hungerford’s way.

On the half-hour mark a careless Charlie Raglan backpass gifted an opening to Bradbury. He cut the ball back for strike partner Richie Whittingham, whose shot beat Stevens but was cleared off the line by Dickie.

The home side were ahead seven minutes later, via a defensive mix-up.

A long ball ended up with Stevens scuffing a clearance into Dickie and colliding with the defender, leaving Bradbury an open goal.

United trailed at the break, but they were level five minutes after the restart with their first moment of attacking quality.

Armani Little drifted into a central area and rolled a pass into the box for Lopes to cushion a curled shot into the far corner from 15 yards.

The game took on a feisty edge after the equaliser, with Bradbury in particular making a nuisance of himself.

But when the game settled down, United gained the upper hand.

With 14 minutes left they were ahead. Substitute Albie Hopkins did well out wide and found Sam Long, whose cross to the back post was headed in by United’s unnamed left back.

But the lead did not last.

A ball over the top should have been dealt with by Agboola, but the goalkeeper was undone by the playing surface, which saw him mis-kick and one of the home side’s substitutes was gifted an easy finish.

There was still time for United to respond, though.

In stoppage-time Norman was brought down in the box and the full back converted from the spot himself to give the visitors a hard-fought victory.

United are next in action on Saturday, when they host Crystal Palace at the Kassam Stadium.
