GAVIN Whyte had to forego an appearance in the Champions League to complete his move to Oxford United – but says it was worth it.

The 22-year-old yesterday put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal after an undisclosed fee was agreed between the U’s and Crusaders.

The sought-after winger scored 23 goals in 20 games last season, helping his team to back-to-back Northern Ireland Premiership titles.

But to further his international ambitions, Whyte, who has played for his country’s under 21s and also trained with the senior squad, knew he had to move to England.

And when he found out Oxford were interested, he jumped at the chance – even though it meant missing out on the chance to play in the Champions League.

“I was at the airport waiting to fly out for Crusaders’ match in Bulgaria (against Ludogorets) when the management sat me down,” he said.

“They said Oxford wanted to do the deal, and I couldn’t wait to get it done.

“But because I was just about to go, they said I could sort it all when I got back.

“So I flew over and said my goodbyes to all the boys.”

He added: “It was a big disappointment not to play in the Champions League – but when you see the score (Crusaders lost 7-0) it wasn’t so bad to miss out after all!”

Whyte made a big impression at Crusaders, but is now looking to reach new heights with United.

“I had a long chat with the manager, know what he wants to do and how he wants to play and I am excited,” he said.

“Of course, it’s a big move for me coming over, but I needed to do that to keep progressing.

“It’s a very big step. It happened really quickly in the end but this is what you have got to do, and this is what I want to do.”

He added: “My mum has rung me five times today and is really going to miss me, and I have a wee girl too – but it’s something I will get used to quick, I’m sure.”

Boss Karl Robinson says the U’s fought off interest from other clubs to get their man, who he is predicting will excite supporters.

“He is quick, skilful and has an eye for goal – many other clubs were looking at him, including those in higher leagues,” he said.

“Gavin will add real pace out wide but can also play more centrally, and we look forward to working with him.”
