LUCY Stewart scored twice as Oxford Hawks Ladies came from behind to win 4-2 away to Bristol Firebrands in Investec Conference West.

After going behind early on, Hawks took charge and equalised when Caro Harris converted a short corner.

Stirring words at half-time from coach Andy Clark saw the visitors attack incessantly in the second half.

They went ahead when Stewart beat four defenders and smashed the ball home.

Stewart then made it 3-1 from a short corner after good work from Gemma Darrington.

Sophie Shakespeare’s tireless work was finally rewarded with their fourth goal after Katie Lowe’s shot rebounded off the keeper into her path.

Firebrands pulled a goal back, but could not deny Hawks.

l OXFORD Hawks men never got out of the starting blocks and lost 3-1 away to London Wayfarers in South League Premier Division 1.

The visitors turned the ball over time and time again

Wayfarers took the lead midway through the first half from a penalty corner.

Apart from a ten-minute revival early in the second half during which Jack Biggs converted one of only two penalty corners won by Hawks all game, Wayfarers always looked the more likely winners.

And two quick goals sealed their victory against a dismal performance from Hawks, who are going to have to work hard to avoid their season fizzling out into a whimper.

Oxford dropped to fifth place in Regional 1 after a surprise 1-0 defeat at PHC Chiswick.

Before the game both sides paid tribute to Oxford 7th’s goalkeeper Tim Bence, who had died the previous weekend.

The visitors struggled to come to terms with Chiswick’s slow sticky pitch.

A breakaway goal midway through the second half from William Bishop sealed the win for the hosts in a rare attack

Bicester continued their promotion push in Middlesex, Berks, Bucks & Oxon Division 1 with a convincing 6-2 victory at home to Ashford 2nd.

Dave Sutcliffe led the way with a hat-trick, while their scoring was completed by Will Hartley (2) and Jordan Chester, both of whom had superb all-round games, while Leo Graves and Ian Oak dominated the midfield battle.

Witney maintained their five-point lead with a hard-earned 2-1 victory at Ramgarhia, courtesy of goals from Jacob Deacon and Ryan Fitz-John.
