OXFORD’S two Jamies, Kirkwood and Copus, topped the UK finishers at the Scullers’ Head of the River, writes John Wiggins.

Kirkwood, the 2009 winner was runner-up to Portugese lightweight international Pedro Fraga, who won by two seconds over the four-and-a-quarter mile Tideway course.

Now managing his training around his coaching at Oxford University Women’s BC, Kirkwood at least had the consolation of taking the elite title.

Oxford Brookes oarsman Copus – the winner in 2014 finished third and was the runner-up to Fraga in the elite lightweight event.

Andrea Dennis, some four years after retiring from lightweight international sculling, is back in action at City of Oxford and finished ninth of the 160 female scullers, claiming the Masters A title by a 50-second margin.

Sean Morris dominated the septuagenarian section and took the Masters H title.

The Wallingford sculler, with the age-related time handicap applied, had the fastest time at the head of the 400 senior men scullers.

Clubmate Charles Parry was third in the Masters G event while Abingdon’s Bev Ashton claimed third place in women’s masters B.
