A BLISTERING first round paved the way for Adam Wootton to win the CK Group PGA Kent Open Championship.

Representing the Oxford Golf Centre, he carded an eight-under par 64 in the first round at Prince’s in Sandwich.

A well-timed eagle on the par five 15th during the second round sealed a 69 to finish on 11-under and take home the £2,100 winner’s cheque by two shots.

Wootton was thrilled to take advantage of ideal weather early on.

He said: “In the first round there was only a gentle breeze and when I teed off in the morning, and with the course playing in great shape, the conditions were pretty well perfect for scoring.”

Despite the wind strengthening in the second round, the eagle ensured Wootton had the luxury of having a two-shot lead over Scott Marshall, from Buckinghamshire, standing on the final tee.

Despite finding the rough, he was able to seal victory with a par, going top of the fledgling standings.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season, and having a crack at the Virgin Atlantic Order of Merit title.”

The next event is the PGA Surrey Open Championship at Kingswood Golf & Country Club on July 28-29.

  • FRILFORD Heath hosted the PDC Golf Championship on the EuroPro Tour, where Adam Runcie came out on top.

The Welshman birdied the 18th on the Red Course to shoot a three-under par 69 to finish the 54-hole event on nine-under and claim the £10,000 prize by a single stroke.

Luke Jackson (Lindrick, South Yorkshire) was runner-up, while South African Thriston Lawrence and England’s Laurie Canter were a further shot back tied for third.
