Oxford City have boosted their attacking options after bringing in winger Matt Whichelow on loan from Boreham Wood until the end of the season.

However, the new recruit is cup-tied for tomorrow’s trip to Woking in the third round of the FA Trophy.

General manager Justin Merritt moved quickly to replace star man Luke Coulson following his move to Eastleigh for an undisclosed fee and believes the Watford youth product will prove a valuable addition.

He said: “With the loss of Luke Coulson we needed to add to our attacking options and Matt is a player we’ve been aware of for a long time.

“He played 41 times in a team which got promoted from our league last season, so he’s a very good player and maybe things haven’t worked out for him as he would have liked this year.”

Full-back Matt Bevans is also cup-tied.

But City welcome back striker James Roberts, who was unavailable for Tuesday’s 1-0 Oxfordshire Senior Cup triumph over Banbury United due to his involvement in parent club Oxford United’s 3-0 victory against Ardley United on Wednesday.

City are without the injured Darren Pond and Ander Del Alamo (both ankle), but welcome back defender Alejandro-Adrian Santiago from a hamstring injury.

Santiago in particular is looking for revenge this weekend after being dismissed as City were beaten 2-1 in their second-round replay away to Woking in last year’s competition.

It’s a decision which still rankles with Merritt, who said: “We were aggrieved with the sending -off.

“For them to score from the free-kick straight after added insult to injury.”

However, the City boss insisted that events a year ago will have little bearing on the outcome of this weekend’s last16 encounter.

“We’ll take some knowledge and experience from that result, but a lot of the players on both sides have changed,” he said.

“They’re on the edge of the play-offs in the league above us and they have a fantastic squad with some top-class non-league players.

“When you get to the last 16 you have absolutely nothing to fear, so we’re going to enjoy it.

“Make no mistake, we are the underdogs, but we don’t mind being in that position.”
