Oxfordshire's Kieran Bird was ecstatic after qualifying for the European Youth Olympic Festival for the first time with a personal best at the British Championships in London.

Bird, a member of Bicester Blue Fins, touched home first in 2mins 4.12secs to win the junior 200m butterfly final at the London Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park.

He will now head out to Tbilisi in Georgia with Team GB.

“It was a pb for me,” he said. “And although it was not the time I was hoping for, I’ve won the race and that is really good going.

“I was going for around 2.02, but I had a bit of an adrenalin rush and went out too fast for the first 100m.

“I’m going to the Europeans now which I was aiming for and that’s really cool.

“It’s a pretty amazing feeling to go there and I’ve never been abroad to compete before, so it’s a totally new experience.

“It was a tough race. The last 50m was really hard but it was a good swim and I’m pleased with how I got on.”

City of Oxford’s Emily Wood failed to reach the women’s open 200m breaststroke final, recording 2.34.74 in the heats.

Clubmate Fabian Whitbread posted a time of 2.07.87 in the men’s open 200m individual medley to finish 19th.

CELEBRATION TIME: Didcot Barramundi’s junior squad show off their medals after competing in the Maxwell Meet TABLE TENNIS FIVE Oxfordshire youngsters have been selected for the South and West Under 15 regional trials.

Brothers Tom and Ollie Price, Sammy Lion-Cachet and Ben Charlesworth (all Abingdon) and Didcot’s Jake Taylor have received call-ups.

The Prices and Charlesworth are part of Gloucestershire’s youth programme, while Lion-Cachet and Taylor are with Sussex.

Oxon quintet in trials call-up CRICKET Consistent Holton make it a hat-trick of title wins BOXING Conway, nine, triumphed in the 50m backstroke, the 50m breaststroke and 200m individual medley, while Cooke, 11, won the 100m freestyle, the 200m individual medley and the 200m backstroke.

Callum Smart, 14, touched home first in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke.

In the girls’ events, Gretel Goodgame, ten, won gold in the 400m freestyle and 50m freestyle.

Abingdon Vale’s Daniel McNamara, 12, won the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events, while teammate Max Bolcato, 12, took the 200m individual medley.

Luke Wilby triumphed in the 200m backstroke.

l CHRIS Simms led the way for Didcot Barramundi’s youngsters with nine gold medals, two club records and four regional qualifying times at the Maxwell Meet.

Maddison Langley produced three golds and two club records.

l THE year six boys swimming team from Bishop Loveday Primary School, Bodicote, Banbury, have become double county champions.

Joshua Vance, James Thornley, Callum Brotherhood, Harvey O’Rourke and reserves Archie Twelvetrees and Isaac Troy, won the individual stroke and freestyle relay finals at the English Schools’ Swimming Association team relay at The Dragon School, Oxford.

They will now represent Oxfordshire in the South East regional finals in Guildford next month.
