BOB Pincombe reached the second round of the Johnsons Buildbase Oxford League’s Men’s individual event after a thrilling win over Chris Bateman, writes PETE EWINS.

The Gladiator Club member saw off his opponent, from Marlborough Club, by just 420 points on aggregate after their match finished level at 1-1.

Played at Didcot Conservative Club, Pincombe went through 10,680-10,260 in a classic encounter.

Phil McFarland joins him in the next round after a surprise 7,370-5,650 win over John Patey.

In the Premier Section individual event, played at the Masons, Vikings’ Alan Oliver defeated teammate Allan Lacey 2-0.

Oliver won the first leg against the break 5,450-4,500 and then secured victory when taking the second 6,140-3,650. Mark Trafford scored an impressive 13,250, including a break of 7,270, in his 2-0 win over Richard Garrett.

In the Captain’s Cup, Kennington’s Pauline Withey progressed with a 2-0 victory over Dave Gordon.

Alan Lowe beat Dave Tooke and Keith Hollis saw off Dave Rose in the Pat Webber Cup.
