JOHNNY Mullins is delighted to keep the captain’s armband during Jake Wright’s injury, but says it has no impact on his game.

The centre back skippered the side in last weekend’s 1-0 home win against Newport County and, with Wright sidelined, will continue in the role at Cambridge United tomorrow.

It was the first game Wright had missed since Michael Appleton took over as head coach in the summer, so Mullins, who has deputised in the past, was unsure whether he would be the stand-in captain.

He said: “Since the gaffer’s come in you don’t quite know what’s going to happen if the captain’s out.

  • Latest United news:

“It was nice and I enjoyed it, but Jake’s the captain and he’s a really good one.

“It shouldn’t change anyone’s game, there should be 11 captains on the pitch.”

Mullins admits he has taken plenty of stick in training following his rampaging run up the pitch late in their win over Newport.

“I’ve taken a little bit,” he said.

“Apparently when I run my knees are up by my head. We won, so I’ll take any stick I get.

“I didn’t want to just punt it upfield because I knew no-one was there.

“I don’t quite know why I went on the run.

“I genuinely thought when I knocked it the second time I was going to beat him, but looking back I was never getting there.

“It managed to get us up the pitch, so it wasn’t too bad.”

He added: “Even though I did go on a crazy charge it wasn’t because I had an armband on.”
