JAMES ROBERTS' second-half strike made it three wins from three pre-season games for Oxford United as they beat a spirited Didcot Town side 1-0 at Draycott Engineering Loop Meadow Stadium.

United are four leagues above Calor League Division One South & West side Didcot but were unable to make that difference tell in an entertaining first half.

Although Oxford enjoyed the majority of possession and chances it was the home side who came closest to finding the net in the opening 45 minutes, with Ryan Brooks poking narrowly wide after getting the wrong side of the U's defence.

Youngsters Sam Humphreys and Tyrone Marsh both looked lively but were denied by in-form Didcot keeper James Foster.

However, it was another teenager, James Roberts, who finally made the breakthrough for the visitors, turning in a crowded area before firing neatly into the far corner.

This sparked a host of changes from both sides, with Didcot substituting five and United changing all 10 outfield players as they had done at Oxford City on Tuesday.

But despite the injection of fresh legs there was precious little incident in the final half-hour and United were able to comfortably see out the victory.

Didcot: Foster (Williams 56), Elkins (Bernasconi 56), Organ, McKirnan (Self 56), Carnell, Learoyd, Haysham, Clarke (Parish 56), Mills, Brooks, Whitehead (Baines 56).

Oxford: Crocombe, Hunt (Bevans 58), Long (Newey 58), Wright (Mullins 58), Meades (Raynes 58), Ashby (Rose 58), Ruffels (Collins 58), O'Dowda (Hylton 58), Marsh (Shama 58), Humphreys (Potter 58), J Roberts (Hawtin 58). Subs not used: L Roberts.

Ref: D Leach.

Attendance: 571.

Well I for one was happy today, lots of good passing with the youngsters in the first half making there keeper do some work, Tyrone I thought was excellent, second half more of the same and then the first teamers made an appearance and ran the game but could not score, by this time Sharma was trying to score from everywhere and missing, and Alfie was trying to hard but a win is a win.

Rumours with regards to Kitson abound but nothing official.

Still unbeaten.

It was a good workout. Appleton certainly has them passing the ball on the ground a lot and plenty of movement. Agree Marsh worked hard, but not sure he will improve much further, Roberts could well overtake him this season. Newey did well when he came on.

As BigAl said, there was a lot of gossip about Kitson's future. All in all a good afternoon, non stop sunshine, none of those storms that were forecast.

Considering a lot if U's fans dislike Kitson, or is that people on here only, I was pleasantly surprised a lot of people wanted to know why he wasn't in the line-up.
I'm super happy the news wasn't about him leaving. I think this would be his last season :/ though I get to say I saw one of my most favourite players play on more than once occasion!

Disagree regarding Kitson, it is the quality of the other players that is the problem. Not enough quality up front equals lack of goals. This is why United did not make the cut. Kitson has the experience and vision to see things lesser players don't. Too many red cards is a problem with him.

Good youth players are hitting the spot to get wins. But really we should be burying teams such as we have played so far. Against better league opposition where will we stand. Real questions about the strength and ability of the team to make the mark at present.

For me kitson is quality , but is much too slow and gives away too many fouls because of this, like to see him in a coaching role at oxford .
