Oxford Saints fell to an agonising 21-20 defeat at home to Shropshire Revolution, denting their National Central Division play-off prospects.

Despite going all out for a vital late score, the visiting defence held firm to secure the narrowest of wins.

It started so well for Saints, with running back Stephen Bentley bursting through for a touchdown.

However, the extra-point kick was blocked, and this would come back to cost Oxford dear.

Shropshire hit straight back with a touchdown of their own and the successful kick put them 7-6 ahead.

But Oxford responded well, Bentley going over for his second score.

Rather than taking the kick, Saints chose to go for two extra points by attempting a pass, with receiver James Walter making a terrific diving catch to make it 14-7 at half-time.

Oxford were pegged back soon after the restart when Revolution brought the scores level with a nine-yard touchdown.

But Saints showed great character to close the gap once more.

Rookie quarterback Harry Brookmyre fed Walter for a touchdown pass to put them ahead.

Oxford turned down the kick, but this time their attempt for two points failed as Bentley was unable to get into the end zone.

It proved crucial, as missed tackles allowed the visitors to score a late touchdown, slotting the kick to go 21-20 ahead.

And although Oxford went all out for the win, they could not find a breakthrough.
