A SCHEME aimed at making ice hockey more accessible to youngsters in Oxford is beginning to bear fruit.

Getting into the sport can be difficult for novices, due to the basic skills and large amount of kit which is required to get started.

But a small group of volunteers at Oxford Junior Stars have set up a Learn to Play programme for under 16s.

In the ten weeks since it began at Oxford Ice Rink, a group of 24 children have come through the intiative.

To begin with, only a handful could skate well, but they have been quick learners.

Jeff Sykora, head coach at the club, is delighted with the impact Learn to Play has made so far.

He said: β€œIt is a huge privilege to watch a group of young and budding ice hockey stars not only gain the skills to play the game, but also to have so much fun doing it.

β€œI would always recommend giving ice hockey a shot, lacing up a pair skates and seeing how much fun it really is and now there is an excellent pathway to do it.”
