PORTSMOUTH 1, OXFORD UNITED 4

August 3

THE mother of all opening day victories provided the launchpad for an excellent start to the season.

Patrick Agyemang headed Portsmouth in front, but Alfie Potter turned the game on its head.

The winger dazzled, setting up two goals for Deane Smalley and bagging another double for himself as Pompey were dismantled to the delight of 2,500 away fans.

MANSFIELD 1, OXFORD UNITED 3

November 16

UNITED looked genuine title contenders as Mansfield were outplayed.

Dave Kitson delivered a masterclass, none more so than with a wonder pass which led to James Constable scoring his 100th U’s goal.

Bicester Advertiser:

The victory took Chris Wilder’s men top, where they stayed for a month.

OXFORD UNITED 1, TORQUAY 0

January 25

A MEDIOCRE game was memorable for the muddled post-match intrigue over Chris Wilder’s exit.

After a lengthy delay, chairman Ian Lenagan came out and uttered the now famous line: “I’ve just looked in his office and he’s not there, but it would appear he has resigned.”

Wilder refuted the claims, but by Monday he was at Northampton.

NEWPORT 3, OXFORD UNITED 2

February 18

A 16-GAME unbeaten away run away was the backbone to United’s challenge, but the collapse was triggered when it came to an end.

United, who had despatched Mansfield 3-0 three days’ earlier, were never the same again.

DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE 1, OXFORD UNITED 0

March 29

CONFIDENCE was low, but United scrapped to what looked like a hard-earned point in Gary Waddock’s second game.

They were denied in the cruellest fashion on 89 minutes, as a hopeful shot went in via Michael Raynes and Matt Bevans.

A heated altercation between Jake Wright and a supporter only deepened the gloom.

OXFORD UNITED 0, YORK CITY 1

April 18

DESPITE the wretched form, a win on Good Friday would have put the U’s in pole position for the play-offs.

The game was decided on a disputed penalty, but the hosts created little as York seized their chance and didn’t look back.

Bicester Advertiser:

  • Ryan Williams rues a missed chance in the crunch game against York

There were 3,000 U's fans at Portsmouth after the ticket **** up. Why does the Oxford Mail always ignore that?

What defined our season was not being good enough to secure enough points for automatic promotion. Not 6 random games selected by a reporter with too much time on his hands.

Please stop going on about the first win of the season (Oxford fans). Portsmouth proved how bad they were by being at the bottom of the table all season. We beat them because they were poor. Not quite as poor as Northampton but I don't think it was some automatic right to be at the top or for promotion. This some times sounds the case from fans after games on Rad Oxford.
The most defining match of the season for me was the trouncing at Newport who are a terrible team.

A better article would be 'Six off the pitch incidents'

1. Wilder still being in a job after a dismal 12/13 season (How quickly people forget)

2. No further coaches being signed over the summer with those idiots Lewis and Melville left to skip around a pitch for 20 minutes and call it training

3. Lack of decent match winning signings - Newey, Hunt, Rigg, Smalley are not good enough

4. The farce surrounding Wilders exit - real professional football club

5. Not hiring Tisdale because apparently we're bigger than Exeter

6. Wilder blaming the fans/Wright blaming the fans/Lenagan blaming the fans/Lewis blaming the fans. Fans blaming Waddock

Also you could add - No decent striker being signed, Constable being kept on just so eventually he'll be our all time highest goal scorer (I predict 2017/18 season), lack of cover when Potter, Meades, Mullins were injured because we don't wantt o sign loan players...only when we do they are in positions we don't really need.
