ATHLETICS: Speedy Smith is the star
TRACK AND FIELD
SPRINTER Ramone Smith was Radley’s star man in their opening Sweatshop Southern League Division 1 meeting at Peterborough.
Smith, 31, broke the Division 1 100m record as he roared to victory in a time of 10.6secs.
He also set a second personal best in the 200m with a 21.6 clocking, which saw him finish 0.8 secs clear of second-placed Ben Sturgess (Bedford & County).
However, Radley’s small and inexperienced team had to be content with third place behind hosts Nene Valley and winners Bedford.
Stuart Ferguson also doubled up, with victories in the 800m (1min 59.9secs) and 1,500m (4.19.1).
Jordan Dorrian was their other men’s A string victor, taking the long jump in 6.65m.
Kathyrn Woodcock was Radley’s leading lady, winning the discus in 41.25m and finishing second in the hammer (40.73), with both personal best distances.
Faith Brew edged out Hannah Goddwin (Bedford) by 0.1 sec to win the 800m in 2.21.9.
Promoted Oxford City finished second on their return to Division 2 North after edging out Harrow by three points at Horspath.
Thames Valley Harriers powered to victory with 220 points and top the table after round one, while City scored 175 to Harrow’s 172.
Oxford’s tally was based around a consistent effort, but their star man proved to be Ben Kelsey.
Kelsey won the A string shot putt in 12.87m and the discus in 46.87.
Melissa Hawtin enjoyed a dominant in the ladies’ events.
She won the 3,000m by more than a minute in 9.58.15 and then added 1,500m victory in 4.50.08.
Aliysa Codrington secured the 400m honours in 1.01.06. and showed her versatility with other top-three finishes in the 200m, 400m hurdles, and shot.
