FOOTBALL: Banbury throw away chance of rare victory
8:00am Monday 31st March 2014 in Sport
Banbury Utd 3, Bashley 3
Banbury United ended their record run of nine successive Calor League defeats, but threw away a golden chance of beating bottom club Bashley at Spencer Stadium on Saturday.
The Puritans appeared to be cruising to their first Premier Division win for three months when they led 3-0 with less than 20 minutes to go.
But boss Edwin Stein watched in dismay as the visitors scored three goals – the last in the fifth minute of injury time – to snatch an unlikely draw.
The only consolation for Banbury was that they had ended that dreadful losing sequence.
Amazingly, all the goals came in the second half after a dull opening 45 minutes in which the home side, who gave a debut to Tom Fishwick – signed from Racing Club Warwick – had the upper hand.
Banbury opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. Marvin Martin fed Albi Skendi, who bustled his way through to the edge of the Bashley penalty area before unleashing a drive into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later, Skendi returned the favour as he passed to an unmarked Martin, who fired home past keeper Nic Jones.
Banbury made it 3-0 after 69 minutes.
Substitute Claudio Dias knocked the ball forward for Adeyinka Talabi, who fought off a challenge before netting with a lob from the edge of the penalty area.
It looked as though Banbury had the points in the bag.
Bashley pulled a goal back on 73 minutes when former Puritan, Manny Soetan, flicked the ball to Jack Odam, who netted from a narrow angle.
Two minutes later, Bashley were back in the game as Odam scored with a superb curling shot into the far top corner.
After a bad miss from Soretan, it looked as though Banbury were going to hold out.
But deep into stoppage time Scott Joyce got on the end of along punt forward and knocked home from 12 yards.
Banbury Utd: Dutton, Cray, Abrahams, Isaac, Blossom, Fishwick (Collins 78), Martin, Obeng, Skendi, Green (Dias 66), Dumbleton (Talabi 57). Subs not used: Tappin, Bevis.
