JOHN Quill says the dream of playing in the Premiership was a major reason for him joining London Welsh.

The USA international flanker made his debut for the Exiles as a replacement in Sunday’s 42-18 Greene King IPA Championship victory over Moseley.

And although the Irish-born 23-year-old, who is on the bench again at Cornish Pirates tomorrow, faces stiff competition for a place in the side, he is relishing being part of Justin Burnell’s squad.

Quill, who qualifies for the USA because his mother was born in New York, came through Munster’s academy and represented Ireland at under 19 level.

Top-flight rugby, however, is missing from Quill’s CV, which makes promotion to the Aviva Premiership even more of an incentive.

“It’s where all players want to play,” said Quill.

“The Championship is a far cry from the Premiership, although it is a good league.

“The Pemiership is probably where the club should be and to play there is a massive incentive for me and all the players.”

Quill added: “I think we have got the players to do it.

“If we knuckle down over the next few weeks, we have definitely got an opportunity to make the play-offs and do well.”

Quill was playing most recently for Dolphin RFC in Ireland before joining Welsh, having also had spells with Boston and on trial with the London Irish academy.

He made his Exiles debut after replacing Carl Kirwan on the hour mark against Moseley.

“It was great to be involved so quickly after coming over,” he said.

“It was a good win and I was happy with the five points.

“Hopefully, I can kick on from here and be involved until the end of the season.”

Quill was one of eight new signings announced before the Moseley game, bringing Welsh’s squad to 47.

Such is the competition that many players are being loaned out to National 1 clubs.

But Quill said: “I look forward to it. It is a good way to be.

“Guys are going to pick up knocks and be rested.

“It is a case of taking opportunities when they come around.”
