FOOTBALL: Flood-hit Abingdon issue an SOS for support
Abingdon Town have sent out an SOS for help after being submerged by floodwaters for three months.
The cash-strapped Culham Road club hope to host their first Uhlsport Hellenic League game since December on Saturday when tenants AFC Hinksey are due to face Milton United.
Abingdon match secretary Mark Ellis said: “The pitch could be playable if we get decent weather.”
However, the Abbots, who played their first competitive game since Boxing Day when they lost 2-0 at Bracknell Town last Saturday, are now facing the prospect of discovering that their floodlights won’t work following the winter wash-out.
“We honestly don’t know until we turn them on,” said Ellis.
With no games taking place, Abingdon, who don’t have a match this Saturday, have lost income running into thousands of pounds.
Now they are urging people to support their weekly car boot sales, which take place on Sundays (8am), with £5 a car and free entry.
Ellis added: “We are desperate for funds at the club not having had any football being played.
“It will need a lot of work to get the pitch up to standard and there is the possible expense with the floodlights. Every penny we get goes back into the club.”
